Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month...as if any of us need more awareness of our stress?!  What most of us could use is better stress management techniques, better coping skills, more access to treatment, better communication skills, and tools for managing difficult emotions.

Many studies have shown significant stress reduction with exercise, meditation, praying, journaling, singing, playing an instrument, listening to music, art (painting, drawing, doodling, pottery etc), accupuncture, massage, heat (hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas), laughter and good nutrition.  All of these techniques work better when they are a regular, consistent part of your life.

Oftentimes professional help is needed, and people have a hard time finding mental health providers.  We have many resources available on our website for finding help

4 6oz skin-on wild caught salmon fillets
1 tsp kosher salt, divided
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper, divided
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided
2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tsp ground tumeric
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp honey
6oz baby kale (about 6 cups)
1 15oz can unsalted cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
1/4 cup chopped walnuts, toasted

Constipation is a common complaint.

** stools that are hard, dry or lumpy

**stools that are difficult or painful to pass

**a feeling that not all stool has passed

Strategies to reduce constipation:

   drink 100oz water/day minimum
   consume 30-40 grams fiber/day
   reduce bread, rice and other starches
   exercise regularly

Alcohol Awareness Month 

Did you know that 10% of Americans over age 12 have an Alcohol Use Disorder?  

Alcohol Use Disorder includes alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse, with mild/moderate/severe subclassifications for each.  There is a lot of confusion on what constitutes a "safe" level of alcohol consumption, how much alcohol consumption results in alcoholism, liver disease or other adverse health consequences.  In the past, "moderate drinking" was considered safe, however the definition of "moderate drinking" has been changed over time.  Many people don't realize that "1 glass of wine with dinner everyday" is now considered "heavy drinking".  

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines HEAVY DRINKING as:

Men:  more than 4 drinks on any one day or more than 14 drinks in 1 week

Women:  more than 3 drinks on any one day or more than 7 drinks in 1 week. 

Recognizing problematic alcohol use can be confusing.  Thankfully, very clear information is available.
