PTSD Awareness Month

June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness (PTSD) month.

Many people believe PTSD is limited to people who have experienced one severe traumatic event, such as war, a mass shooting, rape, kidnapping, robbery. The more common experience in the population is complex PTSD, which is a result of exposures to multiple traumas over a prolonged period of time. It is estimated that 14% of children are victims of child abuse and/or neglect, 35% of women and 28% of men have experienced severe intimate partner violence, and 48% of both men and women have experienced intimate partner psychological abuse. Bullying, harassment and discrimination by the general public and institutional bias contributes further psychological damage.

Symptoms of complex PTSD include constantly feeling on edge, flashbacks, feeling stuck in fear and anxiety, chronic insomnia, emotional numbing, a feeling of disconnection from oneself, loved ones and ones external surroundins, difficulty maintaining relationships, multiple physical symptoms including chronic pain of any kind, hormone dysregulation, weight loss resistance, depression, anxiety, brain fog, accelerated aging.

Treatment for complex PTSD is highly complex, and needs to include multiple modalities to be successful (counseling alone is unlikely to work). Yoga, meditation, journaling, prayer, and exercise are helpful for calming down the central nervous system. Body work such as acupuncture, massage, acupressure, dry needling, physical therapy and other techniques aimed at pain relief are an important aspect for treating complex PTSD. Advanced psychological treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), brain spotting and EMDR are helpful with processing the thoughts and feelings that accompany PTSD. Co-treatment for depression and anxiety with counseling, medication, TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), infra-red lasers, alpha wave therapy and all treatments to enhance sleep are also critical.

For a comprehensive easy to understand book about complex PTSD and its various manifestations, and more importantly, HOW TO HEAL, I highly recommend "The Body Keeps the Score", by Bessel van derKolk. The book is available in print and as an audiobook.

Most skincare and cosmetic products contain a variety of chemicals called "endocrine disruptors" (meaning hormone disruptors).  These contribute to a wide variety of medical problems in women (and men and children!) Many other ingredients in skincare products are also toxic to the environment to produce.  BeautyCounter has eliminated all of these chemicals from their products.

Are you on a weight loss journey?  Do you wonder if you are losing water or fat or muscle?  There's an easy, painless way to find out:  come into our office for a body composition analysis.  It takes 5 minutes and costs $35 and feels like you are standing on a fancy scale.  You will receive a printed report with your number of pounds and percent for body water, muscle, bone and fat, and you can track your progress over time to determine if your are gaining/losing water, muscle, bone or fat.  This is important information for anybody on a weight loss journey, because the goal is fat loss for health optimization, not muscle loss...and a regular scale doesn't tell you what kind of weight you are losing.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a critical component of a daily skincare routine, both for skin cancer prevention and anti-aging purposes.

Many sunscreens contain ingredients which are harmful to the environment, (example:  coral reefs and ozone layer) or that are hormone disruptors (phthalates, sulfates, etc) and thus harmful to people and animals and wildlife.

Proper use of sunscreen requires frequent (HOURLY) reapplying, and using generous amounts (1oz to cover the entire body).  A typical full day trip to the beach would require use of an entire bottle PER PERSON, with the required reapplications!

BeautyCounter sunscreen products are free and clear of harmful chemicals.

The sun protection factor (SPF) rating on sunscreen is only valid if the sunscreen is applied properly, and then reapplied every hour.

Apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out into the sun. This allows it to fully bind to your skin and provide maximum protection.

Don't forget those often-neglected spots like your ears and the back of your neck!

Did you know that your lips and eyes can get sunburned too? Use a lip balm with SPF and wear sunglasses with UV protection to keep these sensitive areas safe.

Have you checked your sunscreen's expiration date lately? Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time, so make sure yours is still good to go before you slather it on!

Sunscreen is your best anti-aging tool. By protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, you're preventing premature aging, wrinkles, and most importantly, reducing your risk of skin cancer. Love your skin, apply sunscreen!

Wrinkle Reduction

Wrinkles occur over time due to loss of collagen below the skin surface.  Adequate nutrition, hydration, sleep and toxin avoidance are necessary to reduce and delay the appearance of wrinkles.  But once they appear, smoothing them out can be challenging.   TempSure Envi treatments obtain beautiful results without injecting fillers.  Most people require a series of treatments to reverse existing wrinkles, and then occasional maintenance treatments.

Headache and Migraine Awareness Month

There are many different types of headaches.  The most common are tension headaches, migraines, hormonal, sinus and cluster headaches, to name a few. Understanding your headache type can be the first step in effective treatment.

Migraines are more than just bad headaches. They're a neurological disorder that can cause intense throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.  Many factors can trigger migraines - stress, certain foods, changes in sleep or weather. Keeping a migraine diary can help identify your triggers. Prevention is key!

Tension headaches are the most common type of headaches, and are also called "muscle tension headaches". Symptoms include dull, aching tight band around your head, pressure at your temples or over your eyebrows, sensitivity around the neck, forehead, scalp, or shoulder muscles, difficulty focusing, irritability, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, mild sensitivity to light/sound, mild nausea.

Other less common headache types include cluster headaches, sinus headaches, menstrual migraines, cervicogenic headaches (caused by neck problems), rebound headaches (medication overuse headaches), and hypnic headaches.

If you suffer from frequent headaches it is important to identify the underlying cause, so that the appropriate treatment plan can be formulated.

Child Abuse as a Leading Cause of Complex PTSD

Child abuse is a serious issue and encompasses a range of behaviors that harm children, and is a leading cause of PTSD. Child can be classified into several categories, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect. Here are examples of child abuse:

Physical Abuse: Hitting, shaking, or pushing a child in a way that inflicts physical harm or injury.

Emotional Abuse: Constantly belittling, shaming, humiliating, or verbally assaulting a child, causing psychological damage.

Sexual Abuse: Any sexual act performed with a child, including molestation, indecent exposure, rape, or the exploitation of a child for pornography.

Physical Neglect: Failing to provide a child with basic needs such as food, clothing, hygiene, or medical care.

Emotional Neglect: Ignoring the child's emotional needs, failing to provide love, warmth, and reassurance, leading to emotional or psychological harm.

Educational Neglect: Failing to ensure a child's access to education, such as persistent absence from school or failing to address learning disabilities.

Medical Neglect: Ignoring or refusing to provide necessary medical or mental health treatment for a child.

Exposure to Domestic Violence: Subjecting a child to an environment where they witness frequent violence or severe discord at home.

Parental Substance Abuse: Exposing a child to illicit drugs or excessive alcohol consumption, causing an unsafe environment.

Exploitation: Forcing a child into child labor, trafficking, or other forms of exploitation.

Children exposed to these types of violence frequently have multiple psychiatric diagnoses as a response to their trauma, including anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, oppositional defiance disorder, conduct disorder, borderline personality disorder, ADD, ADHD, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts/attempts, chronic pain, poor school performance, and many other behavioral issues. Note that 7 of the 10 examples above do not involve physical abuse, and would not have any visible marks. Suspected or confirmed physical abuse must be reported to people in a position to help (local police, child protective services, healthcare providers). Nonphysical abuse requires a comprehensive treatment approach which may include support for parental substance abuse, parental mental illness, poverty, etc. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children.
