Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is incredibly common, and on the rise.  Type II diabetes is the more common type, and affects 11% of the US population.  Type II diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot make enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugars.  As the blood sugars rise, the blood vessels throughout the body are damaged, as are the organs.  Type II diabetes frequently results from a variety of lifestyle choices that ultimately overwhelm the pancreas.  A less common disease is Type I diabetes, and results from immune system-mediated destruction of the insulin producing cells in the pancreas.  This usually occurs in childhood, hence the nickname "juvenile diabetes".  Both conditions have the same longterm complications.  Gestational diabetes is diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy.  True gestational diabetes resolves after the baby is delivered, but the mother remains at risk for developing permanent diabetes.  The top 10 ways to AVOID developing diabetes are:

  1. Maintain a Healthy Weight:

    •  Losing excess weight, especially around the abdominal area, can significantly reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.
  2. Portion Control:   Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates and utensils to help control your portions and prevent excessive calorie intake.
  3. Eat a Balanced Diet:

    • Includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit your consumption of processed foods, sugary drinks, and high-fat, high-sugar snacks.
  4. Choose Low-Glycemic Foods:  These include whole grains, legumes, non-starchy vegetables, and lean proteins.  Low Glycemic Index foods do not cause big fluctuations in blood sugar.
  5. Exercise:  Engage in regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or any other exercise you enjoy. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week.
  6. Strength Training:  Incorporate strength training exercises such as weight lifting, squats, lunges, and resistance bands into your routine to build muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories at rest and can improve insulin sensitivity.
  7. Control Stress:  Chronic stress can contribute to diabetes risk. Practice stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or mindfulness to keep stress levels in check.
  8. Get Adequate Sleep:  Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Poor sleep patterns can disrupt hormones related to hunger and blood sugar control.
  9. Limit Alcohol Consumption:  If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation (2 drinks/week for women, 3 for men). Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to weight gain and affect blood sugar levels.
  10. Get Regular Check-ups:
    1. Know your family history as it relates to diabetes.
    2. Visit your healthcare provider regularly for check-ups and screenings. Early detection of prediabetes or diabetes allows for early intervention and management.

Are you on a weight loss journey?  Do you wonder if you are losing water or fat or muscle?  There's an easy, painless way to find out:  come into our office for a body composition analysis.  It takes 5 minutes and costs $35 and feels like you are standing on a fancy scale.  You will receive a printed report with your number of pounds and percent for body water, muscle, bone and fat, and you can track your progress over time to determine if your are gaining/losing water, muscle, bone or fat.  This is important information for anybody on a weight loss journey, because the goal is fat loss for health optimization, not muscle loss...and a regular scale doesn't tell you what kind of weight you are losing.

Alpha Stim

Insomnia?  Pain?

Anxiety?  Depression?

ALPHA STIM™ is an FDA approved microcurrent device that has been proven to improve insomnia, anxiety, pain and depression in over 70 clinical studies in just 20 minutes per day. Pain protocols take longer, depending on the severity of the pain and how many areas need treatment.

Treating insomnia, anxiety, pain and depression with ALPHA STIM™ involves attaching clips to your earlobe which transmit tiny electric currents for 20 minutes daily.  This energy communicates with the acoustic branch of your vagus nerve, which helps to regulate your central nervous system and improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain and insomnia.

Pain protocols involve attaching electrode pads over the painful areas and treating for 20 to 60 minutes, or longer if needed, followed by a 20-minute application of the earlobe clips.  There is also a speedy protocol which treats each affected body part for 6 seconds, followed by a 20-minute application of the ear clips.

We will be offering these devices for purchase or rental, and our first shipment has arrived!

Alpha Stim M treats pain, insomnia, anxiety and depression.  The rental price is $79/month and the purchase price is $1100.

Alpha Stim AID treats insomnia, anxiety and depression.  The rental price is $59/month and the purchase price is $750.

Skincare & Monthly Specials

Most skincare and cosmetic products contain a variety of chemicals called "endocrine disruptors" (meaning hormone disruptors).  These contribute to a wide variety of medical problems in women (and men and children!) Many other ingredients in skincare products are also toxic to the environment to produce.  BeautyCounter has eliminated all of these chemicals from their products.

CBD for pain management

CBD products can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment approach for chronic pain.  CBD products come in many forms, including topical rubs, patches, pills and even vaginal products!  One of my favorite products is Solace Lavendar Comfort Cream from Athena's.  Rubbing it into my aching neck muscles provides decent pain relief after a day on the computer.  Athena's products are free from THC (the active ingredient in marijuana that makes people high).  Athena's CBD products are also sulfate free (which is great for people with sulfa allergies), as well as free from hormone disrupting chemicals (such as phthalates).

Wrinkle Reduction

Wrinkles occur over time due to loss of collagen below the skin surface.  Adequate nutrition, hydration, sleep and toxin avoidance are necessary to reduce and delay the appearance of wrinkles.  But once they appear, smoothing them out can be challenging.   TempSure Envi treatments obtain beautiful results without injecting fillers.  Most people require a series of treatments to reverse existing wrinkles, and then occasional maintenance treatments.

Body Contouring

Did you know we offer body contouring in our Bridgewater office?  These treatments can reduce stubborn belly fat, shrink annoying love handles, and tighten loose skin that appears after losing weight.  Most people require a series of treatments (not just 1) to obtain desired results

Cellulite is a type of scar tissue, and can be a frustrating process to reverse.  Most people need repetitive treatments to smooth out the appearance of cellulite, followed by occasional maintenance treatments.  We offer cellulite reduction packages using a unique radio-frequency energy device.

November is Bladder Health Month

Bladder health is something we take for granted.  When the bladder is working well, we dont give it a second thought.  When its not working well, we can be miserable with urinary frequency, urgency, pain and leaking.  Many people assume that bladder symptoms are urinary tract infections, however there are other conditions that can mimic infections but are not in fact infections.

Interstitial Cystitis is a common conditions characterized by painful, frequent urination.  IC for short, interstitial cystitis is frequently misdiagnosed as an infection.  Most infections resolve quickly with antibiotics.  Interstitial cystitis does not improve with antibiotics.  It is important to know the difference between these 2 diagnoses.

The top 10 ways to reduce symptoms of interstitial cystitis are:

  1. Dietary Modifications:

    • Avoid or limit foods and beverages that can irritate the bladder, such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits.
  2. Hydration:

    • Stay adequately hydrated, but avoid excessive fluid intake in the evening to minimize nighttime trips to the bathroom.
  3. Bladder Training:

    • Gradually increase the time between bathroom visits to improve bladder capacity and reduce the frequency of urination.
  4. Stress Management:

    • Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to reduce stress, which can exacerbate IC symptoms.
  5. Physical Therapy:

    • Pelvic floor physical therapy may help relieve pelvic pain and discomfort associated with IC.
  6. Medications:

    • Your healthcare provider may prescribe medications to manage IC symptoms, such as antispasmodic drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, or medications to reduce bladder inflammation.
  7. Bladder Instillations:

    • Some individuals with IC benefit from bladder instillations of medications like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or heparin to reduce inflammation and pain.
  8. Heat Therapy:

    • Applying a heating pad to the lower abdomen or taking warm baths can help soothe pelvic pain and muscle tension.
  9. Avoid Tight Clothing:

    • Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing to reduce pressure on the bladder and minimize irritation.
  10. Supplements and Alternative Therapies:

    • Some people find relief from IC symptoms through supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate or alternative therapies like acupuncture and biofeedback.

GERD awareness week is in November

GERD stands for Gastro-Esophagael Reflux Disease.

The stomach produces acid which helps to food-borne bacteria and digest protein.  Stomach acid is not supposed to flow backwards and into the esophagus and/or up to the throat.  When it does flow backwards, it can cause symptoms such as heartburn, indigestion, sore throat, asthma exacerbations, bad breath, chest pain and more.  Sometimes the symptoms are so severe that people think they are having a heart attack.

GERD is commonly treated on a longterm basis with acid suppressing medications.  These medications are highly effective in treating the symptoms, however they can have some longterm negative health consequences, such as depleted B vitamins, mood disorders and immune system dysfunction.

The top 10 ways to reduce GERD symptoms are:

  1. Lifestyle Modifications:

    • Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can put pressure on the abdomen and worsen GERD symptoms.
    • Elevate your head: Use a wedge pillow or raise the head of your bed to prevent acid from flowing into the esophagus during sleep.
    • Avoid tight clothing: Tight belts and waistbands can increase abdominal pressure.
  2. Dietary Changes:

    • Identify trigger foods: Keep a food diary to pinpoint foods and beverages that exacerbate your symptoms and avoid them. Common triggers include spicy foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine, and carbonated beverages.
    • Smaller, more frequent meals: Eating smaller portions can reduce pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which helps prevent acid reflux.
    • Don't lie down after eating: Wait at least 2-3 hours before lying down or going to bed.
    • Chewing gum: Chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production, which helps neutralize stomach acid.
  3. Ginger:

    • Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe the digestive tract. You can consume ginger tea or ginger capsules as a natural remedy for GERD.
  4. Aloe Vera:

    • Aloe vera juice can provide relief from GERD symptoms due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Drink a small amount (1-2 ounces) before meals.
  5. Slippery Elm:

    • Slippery elm is an herb that can coat and soothe the esophagus and stomach lining. It's available in various forms, including teas and supplements.
  6. Baking Soda:

    • A teaspoon of baking soda mixed with water can temporarily relieve heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid. Use this sparingly as it contains sodium.
  7. Marshmallow Root:

    • Marshmallow root tea or supplements can help soothe the esophagus and reduce irritation.
  8. Lifestyle Habits:

    • Avoid smoking: Smoking weakens the LES and can exacerbate GERD symptoms.
    • Manage stress: High stress levels can lead to increased stomach acid production. Incorporate relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation into your daily routine.
  9. Licorice Root:

    • Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) supplements may help soothe the esophagus and improve GERD symptoms.  DGL also interacts negatively with many medications, so do not use this product without physician recommendation.
  10. Apple Cider Vinegar:

    • While counterintuitive, some people find that a small amount of diluted apple cider vinegar before meals can help improve digestion and reduce GERD symptoms
