Seasonal Affective Disorder Awareness Month |
|
As the days grow shorter and colder, many people experience a change in their mood and energy levels. For some, this shift in mood can be more than just a case of the "winter blues" – it can be Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression that typically occurs during the fall and winter months when there is less natural sunlight.
One of the key factors contributing to SAD is the reduction in sunlight exposure. Sunlight helps regulate our body's internal clock and the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in mood regulation. When sunlight decreases, serotonin levels can drop, leading to symptoms like low energy, sadness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
Common symptoms of SAD include:
- Persistent low mood
- Lack of interest in usual activities
- Increased appetite, particularly for carbohydrates
- Weight gain
- Oversleeping and difficulty waking up
- Social withdrawal
The good news is that there are effective treatments for SAD. Light therapy, which involves exposure to bright, artificial light that mimics natural
sunlight, is a popular and successful option. Additionally, psychotherapy, antidepressant medications, and lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet, can also help alleviate SAD symptoms.

Are you on a weight loss journey? Do you wonder if you are losing water or fat or muscle? There's an easy, painless way to find out: come into our office for a body composition analysis. It takes 5 minutes and costs $35 and feels like you are standing on a fancy scale. You will receive a printed report with your number of pounds and percent for body water, muscle, bone and fat, and you can track your progress over time to determine if your are gaining/losing water, muscle, bone or fat. This is important information for anybody on a weight loss journey, because the goal is fat loss for health optimization, not muscle loss...and a regular scale doesn't tell you what kind of weight you are
losing.

Most skincare and cosmetic products contain a variety of chemicals called "endocrine disruptors" (meaning hormone disruptors). These contribute to a wide variety of medical problems in women (and men and children!) Many other ingredients in skincare products are also toxic to the environment to produce. BeautyCounter has eliminated all of these chemicals from their products.

CBD for pain management |
CBD products can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment approach for chronic pain. CBD products come in many forms, including topical rubs, patches, pills and even vaginal products! One of my favorite products is Solace Lavendar Comfort Cream from Athena's. Rubbing it into my aching neck muscles provides decent pain relief after a day on the computer. Athena's products are free from THC (the active ingredient in marijuana that makes people high). Athena's CBD products are also sulfate free (which is great for people with sulfa allergies), as well as free from hormone disrupting chemicals (such as phthalates).

Wrinkle Reduction |
|
|
Wrinkles occur over time due to loss of collagen below the skin surface. Adequate nutrition, hydration, sleep and toxin avoidance are necessary to reduce and delay the appearance of wrinkles. But once they appear, smoothing them out can be challenging. TempSure Envi treatments obtain beautiful results without injecting fillers. Most people require a series of treatments to reverse existing wrinkles, and then occasional maintenance treatments.

Prebiotics vs. probiotics vs. both? |
Prebiotics and probiotics are both essential components of a healthy gut, but they serve different roles. Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria found in foods like yogurt and supplements. They directly introduce friendly microbes to your digestive system, aiding in digestion and immune function. In contrast, prebiotics are non-digestible fibers in certain foods like garlic, onions, and bananas. They act as food for the existing good bacteria in your gut, helping them thrive.
Combining both prebiotics and probiotics can promote optimal gut health, as they work synergistically to maintain a balanced and diverse microbiome. A well-nourished gut can positively impact overall health and well-being.

Reducing GI Inflammation |
Common symptoms of gut dysfunction include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, "irritable bowel syndrome", burping and heartburn.
Many health conditions are exacerbated by gut dysfunction, including auto-immune diseases, inability to lose weight, mood issues, rashes, joint pain, asthma and many others.
Gut healing protocols are designed to improve gut function, reduce systemic inflammation, and promote an overall sense of wellbeing.
The 5 hallmarks of the gut healing protocol are:
1) Remove the offending foods
2) Replace probiotics
3) Replace digestive enzymes
4) Repair the GI lining
5) Reintroduce the foods
We offer this protocol in a self-paced online course, and back it up with personalized guidance in medical appointments.

Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Week 12/1-12/7
|
|
|
|
|
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively
known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are chronic gastrointestinal conditions that impact millions worldwide. Crohn's can affect any part of the digestive tract, while colitis primarily targets the colon. Both conditions involve inflammation, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss. They can disrupt daily life and require ongoing management, often involving medication, dietary changes, and, in severe cases, surgery. While the exact causes remain unclear, genetics and immune system dysfunction are thought to play a role. Supportive care and awareness are essential for those facing the challenges of Crohn's and colitis.
